River Quaternion
“Deserts possess a particular magic, since they have exhausted their own futures, and are thus free of time. Anything erected there, a city, a pyramid,
a motel, stands outside time.” —J.G. Ballard
River Quaternion is a dark spectre on the river–an enclosed abstract absolute thing in the geosphere. The pyramid is a form rich with associations–from ancient, visionary, interstellar, conspiracy, to the
utility of Green River’s pyramid housing radioactive material. Usually associated with a perfect fixed form, and a timeless symbol intended to stand beyond life and death, here it is a temporary intruder, a dark
blunt monument adrift, like a symbol in a Jungian dream.
Steve Badgett is a founding member and principal operator of the SIMPARCH collaborative, whose ethos is to create armatures for social interaction through experimentation with materials and design. His practice involves production of large-scale functional environments that examine building practices,
alternative technologies, and site specificity.1996 began working in collaboration as SIMPARCH making site-specific installations. This practice evolved into an ongoing interest in alternative methods and
materials as well as work that involves a broader audience and social context beyond art world parameters. SIMPARCH’s experiments often result in large scale works that take into account the specifics
and concerns of a given site or issue.

High Desert Test Sites heads to Green River, Utah for our next “big” event, HDTS: Epicenter.
Following the epic HDTS 2013 event, which took us on the road to Albuquerque, New Mexico, we are turning our focus in 2015 to the communities and contemporary art programs in rural Utah. For our next event we will be partnering with Epicenter, a Green River-based organization founded in 2009 by a group of architectural designers, in the spirit of Samuel Mockbee’s visionary Rural Studio. We are inspired by the energy and vision at Epicenter, and by the ways in which they provide resources to local residents through active involvement in their intimate community.
HDTS: Epicenter is a collaborative curation of artists’ projects, along with many regional points of interest and programs in diverse locations in and around the rural Utah community of Green River. Participating artists include:
