One with the Creosote by Chris Tiffany
Join the Desert Research Library Book Club for an in-person meeting on June 13th at 7:00pm PST to discuss One with the Creosote by Chris Tiffany at Kate’s house in Joshua Tree.
This month’s book was recommended by Kip, and along with reading it together this month we will be acquiring a copy for the Desert Research Library. Here is a description of the book from the 29 Palms Historical Society’s website:
“With a blending of poetic imagery and journalistic prose, writer Chris Tiffany reflects on her childhood growing up on the Mojave Desert during the ’50s and ’60s, to reveal the origins of an interwoven connection to the natural world around her and its influence on her life’s paths and perspectives.
Tiffany, a Santa Ynez Valley resident who grew up in Twentynine Palms, is daughter of the late Joe and Margot Spangenberg, who moved their family from San Pedro, California, to Twentynine Palms in 1953. The Oasis of Mara, at the northern entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, was her childhood playground.”
Copies of One with the Creosote are available online, but if you are local, we encourage you to purchase a copy at the 29 Palms Historical Society Gift Shop located at 6760 National Park Dr, Twentynine Palms, open Friday-Sunday from 1-4pm. We look forward to welcoming old time Book Clubbers and meeting newcomers in person! Don’t forget to bring snacks and drinks to share, and an extra chair if you have one. As a reminder, you don’t have to read any or all of the book to participate in Book Club, we will always include you in the conversation.
RSVP here to attend. We will send out driving directions to Kate’s house the week before the meeting.

After a brief hiatus during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, our in-person book club, formerly known as Kip’s Desert Book Club, resumed in January 2022 as the Desert Research Library Book Club (or DRL Book Club, for short). Each month, a member of the current Desert Research Library Artist Cohort or another member of the book club community selects a book from the library as that month’s book club selection. We meet at various locations throughout the high desert to discuss the books and share snacks.
The DRL Book Club grew out of our long-standing tradition of monthly book club meetings, first established by Katie Bachler during her Scout residency, then carried on as Kip’s Desert Book Club, from October 2014 through April 2021.
