Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera (Virtual)
We started off the new year right, with a successful first Desert Research Library Book Club meeting. About fifteen Book Clubbers from the Morongo Basin and beyond joined us online to discuss Leslie Marmon Silko’s The Turquoise Ledge. Kip told some stories about local snake tenders, and warned about the dangers of the Green Mojave. We brainstormed books we want to read in the future, and decided that while everyone wants to start meeting primarily in person, we will keep meeting online at least once a quarter so all you long-distance Book Clubbers can keep participating.
We know this announcement about February’s meeting comes a little last minute, so we picked a short and zippy read: Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera. This 128 page book was selected for the Desert Research Library by longtime Book Clubber Edie Fake (thanks for picking the book again, Edie!)
Used copies of Signs Preceding the End of the World are available for about $10 from many online bookstores such as AbeBooks.com and Bookshop.org. As a reminder, you don’t have to read any or all of the book to participate in Book Club, we will always include you in the conversation!
We are requesting that all interested book clubbers RSVP here. This will help us track expected attendance. At 7pm PST on Monday, February 7, click the link below to join the discussion!

Want to get a head start on next month? On March 7 at 7pm we will read Gods Without Men by Hari Kunzru, and meet in-person (outdoors) at Cindy Bernard’s house in Indian Cove.
After a brief hiatus during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, our in-person book club, formerly known as Kip’s Desert Book Club, resumed in January 2022 as the Desert Research Library Book Club (or DRL Book Club, for short). Each month, a member of the current Desert Research Library Artist Cohort or another member of the book club community selects a book from the library as that month’s book club selection. We meet at various locations throughout the high desert to discuss the books and share snacks.
The DRL Book Club grew out of our long-standing tradition of monthly book club meetings, first established by Katie Bachler during her Scout residency, then carried on as Kip’s Desert Book Club, from October 2014 through April 2021.
