The Turquoise Ledge by Leslie Marmon Silko (Virtual)
We are excited to announce that beginning in January 2022, our monthly book club will resume as the Desert Research Library Book Club (or DRL Book Club, for short). Each month, a member of the current Desert Research Library Artist Cohort will select a book from the library as that month’s book club selection.
Our first selection was made by 29 Palms based artist Edie Fake. On January 3, 2022 at 7:00 pm, we will meet virtually on Zoom to discuss The Turquoise Ledge by Leslie Marmon Silko (please note that this previously in-person program has been moved online). This memoir takes place in the desert of the Tucson Mountains, but we think that Mojave desert dwellers will find a lot of resonances throughout the book. Here’s what Edie has to say about The Turquoise Ledge: “Leslie Marmon Silko’s asynchronous and snakey desert memoir is told through personal anecdotes that wind through desert ecology, the complexities of heritage, and the specificity of place.”
Used copies of The Turquoise Ledge are available for less than $5 on many online bookstores such as AbeBooks.com and Bookshop.org, and the San Bernardino Library system has copies in many formats. We also recommend checking out the Libby app, a great free resource for checking out library e-books and audiobooks!
Whether you were a regular of Kip’s Desert Book Club, you always wanted to attend, or you are new to the area, or you’ll be joining from afar, we warmly welcome you to join us.
We are requesting that all interested book clubbers RSVP here. This will help us track expected attendance. At 7pm PST on January 3, click the link below to join in the discussion!

After a brief hiatus during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, our in-person book club, formerly known as Kip’s Desert Book Club, resumed in January 2022 as the Desert Research Library Book Club (or DRL Book Club, for short). Each month, a member of the current Desert Research Library Artist Cohort or another member of the book club community selects a book from the library as that month’s book club selection. We meet at various locations throughout the high desert to discuss the books and share snacks.
The DRL Book Club grew out of our long-standing tradition of monthly book club meetings, first established by Katie Bachler during her Scout residency, then carried on as Kip’s Desert Book Club, from October 2014 through April 2021.
