The Claim
October 2012
This fence is a claim to a piece of property that I cannot claim. Although I don’t own this land, my claim to it is no more tenuous than my claim to anything. As such it is meant as a metaphor for all that cannot truly be claimed, which, when it comes right down to it, is anything at all–places, homes, people, material goods–existence itself. Absolutely everything is temporary, an idea that I find both overwhelming and beautiful. The making of this piece, including the labor of its construction and the futility of the gesture, are a meditation on this reality.
