A Painting
“A Painting” was culled from found footage, super 8 and Standard 8 films that I had found along my travels. I was coming from New York/Vermont and I wanted to bring with me a stark contrast to the desert and festivities that I anticipated were ahead of me when I arrived in Joshua Tree/Twentynine Palms. I wanted to transplant New England into California.
What I brought was a video that was really depressing, abject and cold, but beautiful and reflective of what I actually found there in the desert. The video was in three parts: cars racing in the depths of winter around and around, upon a frozen lake; a woman roaming along a wind swept desolate beach; a Thanksgiving Party at a Special Needs institution for men. The soundtrack was stolen from M.Ward who had managed to turn David Bowie’s joyful “Let’s Dance” into a sobbing dirge.
