CA Truck Heads
CA.Truckheads, 2004 is a work made up of two highly polished aluminum end caps (or truckheads) that one occasionally sees on the ends of oil tanker trucks. With two heads welded together like a big lozenge, the piece is professionally polished and mounted vertically in the ground. Roughly eight feet high, five feet wide and a foot deep, these sculptures are made only in the “readymade “dimensions of the actual heads used on the tankers.
Permanently installed in a rock outcrop on the High Desert Test Site in Joshua Tree, California, the sculpture’s highly polished surface reproduces whatever it mirrors and also acts like a large vortex - an “Alice in Wonderland” kind of hole in the earth.
The piece inspired another work entitled NY. Truckhead,1995 which is permanently installed in a private collection in upstate New York. In that setting it reflects a different palette while distorting the gentle Catskill Mountains.
